Paige Provey has her hands full. Not only is she trying to salvage her career and trying to find the magical book that gave her witchy abilities (it's gone missing), but her estranged sister has appeared on her doorstep. A sister who likes to flirt with Paige's boyfriends. Hands off of Grim! As if that's not enough, Paige has been asked to attend a book signing of a local author who just published a novel called Slasher of Sacrifice. Really. That's the title. When someone from the book signing winds up in a coma, at first Paige thinks it must be related to the missing book. But as more folks start falling into deep comas, she and Grim aren't so sure. Can they solve the mystery? Or will Paige succumb to the mysterious sickness infecting the town?

Boyles's second "The Accidental Medium" novel (following Witch's Block) has writer Paige Provey balancing a tense divorce, a brush with cancel culture, and a serious case of writer's block. Then a mysterious book bonks her on the head and unlocks her supernatural sight. Paige has enough on her plate already, but when her estranged sister shows up unexpectedly, she must navigate it all while keeping her new gifts a secret. Along with her stoic and sexy sidekick Grim, Paige must track down the book that appears to have unleashed not only her powers but also a slew of mythical creatures that are terrorizing the town. Boyles presents a playful paranormal mystery that is big on charm and low on chills. Narrator Mollie Stark has no shortage of Southern sass, and her expressive delivery yields an engaging and amusing listen. The story ends on a major cliffhanger, so listeners should be prepared to check out book three for resolution. VERDICT Will appeal to listeners seeking a cozy paranormal mystery full of wit, whimsy, and witches. Recommended for fans of Tamara Berry, Casey Daniels, and Carol J. Perry.--Lauren Hackert
