London businessman Mr. Bedford is broke. He retreats to a beautifully mundane area of the British countryside to focus on writing a play, which he hopes will bring him financial success. By a stroke of luck, Mr. Bedford quickly reaches new heights...just not in the way he anticipated.

Mr. Bedford's countryside retreat is interrupted by a peculiar physicist named Mr. Cavor, who is developing an anti-gravity material called cavorite. The unlikely pair sets sight on the moon and begins planning the first ever lunar expedition. Mr. Bedford sees it as a lucrative business venture. Mr. Cavor sees it as a chance for recognition in his field. But when they are captured by an alien species, they must face a more pressing matter: Will they make it back to earth alive?

From the father of science fiction H.G. Wells, The First Men in the Moon transports readers to distant worlds while ultimately shedding light on our own human nature and civilization as we know it.

Nimoy and de Lancie, founders of Alien Voices, take the leads in this dramatization of H.G. Wells's science-fiction classic. William Shatner puts in a cameo as king of the ant people who live below the lunar surface and who are discovered by a crackpot British scientist and his next-door neighbor. De Lancie once told this reviewer he and Nimoy founded Alien Voices largely to have fun. This they do to the delight of listeners (though perhaps to the chagrin of Wells's ghost). Whatever the production lacks in finesse, it more than makes up for in sheer verve. This is particularly enticing bait to lure younger listeners away from the boob tube. Y.R. This novel may be one of the lesser works by the socially conscious Wells, but that doesn't take away from the impact of this audio production. Much of the credit for that goes to the full-bodied British voice of narrator Greg Wagland. He skillfully inhabits the pompous Mr. Bedford, a failing businessman who meets Mr. Cavor, an oddball inventor who has created "cavorite," a substance that defies gravity. The pair build a sphere covered with cavorite, which carries them to the moon. There they discover that a world they thought to be uninhabited is actually peopled by a sophisticated civilization they dub the Selenites. When the English meet the inhabitants of their latest would-be colony, chaos ensues. This audiobook illustrates how even an old novel can be brought given new life on audio.
