Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse's debut novel follows three generations torn apart by the genocide against the Tutsis, as they try to reconnect with one another, rebuild broken relationships, and find their place in today's world.

Blanche returns to Rwanda after building a life in Bordeaux with her husband and young son, Stokely. Reuniting with her mother Immaculata, old wounds are reopened for both mother and daughter while Stokely, caught between two countries, tries to understand where he comes from and where he belongs.

In a tone that sounds deeply felt, Nene Nwoko delivers this complicated, tragic story of a family torn apart by the civil war in Rwanda. Her approach underscores Blanche's confusion and trauma at fleeing as a Tutsi child and returning as an adult with her half-French children. Nwoko's delivery is slow, almost to the point of being pedantic, but this is a story that many will want to sink into. Blanche comes back to reunite with her mother, and Nwoko dramatizes the impact of long denied memories. For fans of international literature, this is a gentle performance that explores a difficult historical moment. Listeners will be moved to empathize with Blanche and her son, Stokely, as they struggle to move forward. M.R. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
