Sun Wukong (孙悟空) first frees the monk Tang Sanzang (唐僧) and the disciples Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) and Sha Wujing (沙和尚). He also liberates the captured Twenty-Eight Mansions (二十八宿) and the Five Directions Jie Di (五方揭谛). During the hurried exit from the Little Leiyin Temple (小雷音寺) a dispute arises over luggage. Wukong worries that the brocade kasaya, the purple-gold begging bowl and the travel documents are in the baggage. He transforms and searches the rear cave. There he finds the Yellow Brow Demon (黄眉老怪) asleep, wrapped in the kasaya. Wukong tries to retrieve the robe without slaying the sleeper. His attempt fails and the demon awakens. In the ensuing fray many defenders are trapped. The Mansions, the disciples and several divine generals are swallowed into a compressing bundle bag. Only Wukong escapes. Desperate, Wukong goes to Wudang Mountain (武当山) and requests aid from the Zhenwu Emperor (真武大帝). The deity, citing his duty to guard the north, hesitates to descend. He ultimately spares face and sends the Turtle and Snake Generals (龟蛇二将) and the Five Divine Dragons (五大神龙) to accompany Wukong. They ride to the Little Leiyin Temple and engage the demon. The Yellow Brow Demon uses illusion and a changeable soft-and-hard club to turn the tide. He then deploys the compressing pouch again and swallows many of the attackers. Even these reinforcements are insufficient. A Day-duty Registrar points Wukong to Master Wang (王菩萨) on Xuyi Mountain in Sishui. Master Wang dispatches Young Prince Zhang (小张太子) and four divine generals. They join the fight but are also captured by the bag. At the most critical moment Maitreya (弥勒佛) appears. He reveals that the demon was once a temple acolyte who stole Maitreya's implements. Maitreya devises a ruse. He makes a melon field and tells Wukong to become a ripe watermelon. He writes a talisman in Wukong's palm. The demon eats the melon and swallows Wukong. Inside the demon Wukong creates havoc. Maitreya seizes the chance to reclaim the bundle bag and the soft club. He binds and captures the Yellow Brow Demon. The scattered golden cymbals are restored. Wukong frees the captive deities and his master. The little temple is burned to remove the threat. Grateful, the group gathers their belongings and resumes the westward pilgrimage.
