Zhenyuan Daxian (镇元大仙) first approaches Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) in disguise and learns that a ginseng fruit tree was damaged. Enraged, he reveals his true form. Sun Wukong (孙悟空) confronts him and a fight erupts. Finding physical combat insufficient, Zhenyuan employs a sorcery of the sleeve universe and with a single shake swallows Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie (猪八戒), Sha Wujing (沙和尚) and the monk into his sleeve. Inside the pocket the pilgrims tumble helplessly. Their attempts to tear free fail. Brought back to Wuzhuangguan (五庄观), they are bound and wrapped and the household prepares severe punishments. Zhenyuan orders the legendary Seven-Star whip soaked so it will hiss and throw sparks. His followers jeer while some protective deities sent by Guanyin (观世音菩萨) are injured trying to shield the monk. The captors stoke a cauldron of oil and threaten to fry Tang Sanzang alive. Sun Wukong endures lashes by making parts of his body iron and resists with cunning. By night he slips loose the bonds, instructs Zhu Bajie to uproot four willows and bind them as decoys, and the group makes a daring flight. They put many li between themselves and the temple before Zhenyuan pursues and again with a flick of his sleeve reels them back. At the critical moment Guanyin intervenes and cushions Tang Sanzang so he escapes death. She then instructs Sun Wukong in a ritual using a lambfat jade vessel and willow water to revive a severed immortal root. Sun journeys across the fairy isles, including Penglai (蓬莱), and the Three Stars (福禄寿三星) and other immortals intercede and seek remedies. Guided by Guanyin's method, the pilgrims return and pour living water on the broken roots. Sweet spring water wells up and the ginseng tree revives and bears fruit again. Moved by the recovery, Zhenyuan rejoices, forgives the trespass and forms a sworn bond with Sun Wukong. He orders ten fruits taken down and distributes them among the pilgrims and their helpers as thanks. Old grievances are thereby resolved. With the tree healed and reconciliation achieved, the pilgrimage can resume its westward course.
