乌斯藏国高老庄，有个高太公，他为小女儿招女婿，结果招来个猪妖。高太公请了很多人来降妖，都无功而返。

唐僧为猪妖解开绳索，并收他为徒。

原来猪妖是天蓬元帅下凡，被菩萨赐法号"悟能。

唐僧又为他取别名叫"八戒"。
