Title details for 西游记 by 吴承恩(Wú Chéng'ēn) - Available
Sun Wukong (孙悟空) summons four wooden star beings from Dou Niu Palace (斗牛宫) and reaches Qinglong Mountain (青龙山) at the Xuan Ying Cave (玄英洞). The cave gate is smashed and three bull kings Bi Han (辟寒), Bi Shu (辟暑) and Bi Chen (辟尘) lead cattle demons. Wukong descends and fights with his golden-hooped staff. At first he is overwhelmed by numbers. He calls the star spirits for help. The four star spirits descend and the rhinoceros fiends panic. Jingmu Han (井木犴) and Jiaomu Jiao (角木蛟) pursue the monsters. Kui Mu Lang (奎木狼) and Dou Mu Xie (斗木獬) set aside an old grievance and join the fight. Together they rout the cow spirits and storm the cave to free Tang Sanzang (唐僧) and the disciples. The chase leads into the sea and alarms the West Sea Dragon Palace (西海龙宫). Ao Shun (敖顺) dispatches Prince Moang (摩昂太子) and naval forces to assist. The allied fleet captures two rhinoceroses and recovers corpses and treasures. Wukong apportions the carcasses. He presents a pair of horns to the Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝) and gives one horn to the magistrate of Jinping Prefecture (金平府) to relieve burdens on the people. Pigsy (猪八戒) keeps a horn for himself. With prisoners and spoils accounted for, the group returns the booty to Jinping and prepares to continue west toward Lingshan (灵山) to offer the gains to the Tathagata (如来). At Jinping the miracle becomes civic spectacle. Officials build temples and memorial shrines and host repeated feasts that delay the pilgrims. The disciples enjoy the hospitality while Tang Sanzang grows uneasy. He slips away at night after leaving a courteous note. On the road Sun Wukong comforts his master and invokes the teaching of the Heart Sutra. He argues that realizing emptiness matters more than rote recitation. The pilgrims then arrive at Bu Jin Temple (布金寺), a place tied to the old Jetavana garden. An aged abbot leads them through ruins and speaks of impermanence. He confesses a deeper trouble. During a storm he sheltered a woman who claimed to be a princess of Tianzhu (天竺国). To protect her and because he could not prove her identity, he walled her cell and kept her concealed. Later inquiry in the capital led him to suspect an impostor. He begs the pilgrims to travel to the Tianzhu capital and resolve the matter. The pilgrims enter the bustling city and hurry to the crossroads to watch a princess throw embroidered balls to choose a husband. Tang Sanzang and Sun Wukong blend into the crowd to observe and prepare to unmask any deception.
